Elon Musk has secured a major government contract worth $5.9 billion, allowing his aerospace company SpaceX to launch military satellites into space over the next four years.
SpaceX continues to solidify its position in the space industry, now the most valuable private company globally, after collaborating with NASA and the U.S. government on several key projects.
Musk’s company played a crucial role in rescuing astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who were stranded in space. NASA awarded SpaceX the contract after technical difficulties arose with their original Boeing spacecraft.
In addition, SpaceX has been entrusted with decommissioning the International Space Station within the next decade. Musk has pushed to accelerate this timeline, despite objections from some astronauts.

Musk’s SpaceX has received a major contract from the government to launch military satellites into space
The influence of private companies in the aerospace industry continues to grow as efforts to explore and mine the Moon intensify. Two of the sector’s major players have just received another significant boost from the U.S. government.
As reported by NewsX, SpaceX has been awarded a massive $5.9 billion contract by the U.S. government to launch military satellites into space. This comes alongside contracts for Lockheed Martin & Boeing’s United Launch Services ($5.4 billion) and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin ($2.4 billion).
Together, these companies are set to launch 54 satellites by 2029, with SpaceX handling 28 of the launches, more than half of the total operations.
“The result is assured access to space for our national security missions,” stated the U.S. Space Force following the contract announcement, “which increases the military’s readiness.”
This move is seen by many as further solidifying the growing role of private companies in U.S. space operations, potentially shaping the future of exploration across our solar system.
However, some have raised concerns about Musk’s current position as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, suggesting a potential conflict of interest in the awarding of such contracts.

Some have called Musk’s success with government contracts a conflict of interest
While President Trump has claimed that Musk receives no financial benefits or advantages from his position, it’s easy to understand why some remain skeptical about the potential influence his role could have on government decisions, even though he is expected to step down soon.
This isn’t the first time one of Musk’s companies has significantly benefited from a government contract since he took a position in Trump’s administration. For instance, SpaceX’s subsidiary Starlink was recently awarded a $2.4 billion air traffic control contract, which was originally intended for Verizon.
