The obituary reads: “Sophie was a kind and trusting person, often leaving her vulnerable to being taken advantage of by others. She wrote and drew passionately, much of which reflects her emotional depth and the pain she endured. Many of her writings and artworks serve as roadmaps of her struggles and traumas.

“Despite these roadmaps, diagnoses, and her own revelations, those closest to her, as well as therapists, law enforcement, and others who tried to help, are heartbroken that their efforts couldn’t save her. She often said she would ‘handle it’ on her own and felt compelled to reject the treatment that might have saved her life.

“Sophie. A life taken too soon. May it not be in vain. May we all learn from her brief time on earth and do better. Yes, we must protect our children and do better.”

In the wake of her daughter’s death, Nyweide’s mother, Shelly, spoke to TMZ, revealing that she was aware Sophie had been using drugs.

Bennington Chief of Police Paul J. Doucette has confirmed that the police are investigating a “possible unintentional overdose.”

Shelly shared, “To my knowledge, she was using drugs and was a small, young woman. She was with others when she passed, but I didn’t know them. The investigation is ongoing, and the autopsy results aren’t in yet. They said it could take 6 to 8 weeks, so I can’t say for sure.”
