WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that he has directed the Justice Department to dismiss all remaining U.S. attorneys appointed during the Biden administration, claiming the department had become “politicized like never before.”
“We must ‘clean house’ IMMEDIATELY and restore confidence. America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
The Justice Department has not yet responded to a request for comment.
Last week, the White House issued termination notices to several U.S. attorneys across the country who were appointed by Democratic former President Joe Biden.
On Tuesday, the Justice Department confirmed the departures of U.S. attorneys in Maine, Arizona, Texas, South Carolina, and Montana.
Earlier on Monday, several U.S. attorneys appointed by Biden announced their resignations, while others left their positions last week.
Although it is standard practice for U.S. attorneys to resign following a change in presidential administration, current and former Justice Department officials note that incoming administrations typically request resignations rather than issuing blunt termination letters.
The dismissal of the U.S. attorneys, who serve as the chief federal law enforcement officers in their districts, marks the latest in a series of changes at the Justice Department since Trump assumed office last month.
Typically, career Justice Department officials remain in their roles across presidential administrations. However, dozens in cities such as Washington and New York have either been fired or resigned since Trump took office.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to dismantle what he described as the “weaponization” of the Justice Department, which he claims was used against him during his time out of power.
