All the iPhone models WhatsApp will stop supporting starting next month

As smartphone technology moves forward, some older devices inevitably get left behind — and that’s exactly what’s about to happen with three iPhone models.

In just two weeks (on May 5), WhatsApp will stop working on certain Apple devices, following an update that requires an operating system no more than four years old.

The move is likely to be a major blow for many of WhatsApp’s two billion monthly users, as the app remains the most popular messaging platform worldwide.

WhatsApp has already been discontinued on the first seven iPhone models — released between 2007 and 2013 — including the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPhone 5C.

So, without further ado let’s get into which three iPhones that WhatsApp will no longer work on from next month.

The iPhone 5S will no longer be compatible for WhatsApp (Apple)

iPhone 5S
Released in 2013, the iPhone 5S is only compatible with iOS 12.5.7. As part of the WhatsApp update, iPhones must support iOS 15.1 or later to continue using the app.

If you’re fortunate enough to still have a working iPhone 5S, you might need to consider upgrading to a newer device — that is, if you’re willing to make the switch just for WhatsApp, which is part of Meta.

iPhone 6
Next in line is the iPhone 6, released in 2014. Like the iPhone 5S, the latest iOS version available for it is 12.5.7, which is well below the required iOS version to support WhatsApp.

If you’ve managed to keep your phone in working condition for over a decade, you should definitely bottle that wisdom and sell it — because for most people, phones start to show signs of wear after just two years or so.

iPhone 6 Plus
Ah, I remember when the iPhone 6 Plus was released in 2014. It was the first of Apple’s devices to feature a significantly larger screen.

I recall people joking that it would feel like carrying an iPad in your pocket — and it was only 5.5 inches! Funny enough, I now own an iPhone 13, which is 5.78 inches tall.

Anyway, like the two previous models, the iPhone 6 Plus is only supported by iOS 12.5.7.

iPhones aren’t the only devices affected by WhatsApp’s compatibility updates. As of January, the app also stopped working on Android’s KitKat OS.

WhatsApp explains on its website: “Devices and software change frequently, so we regularly review which operating systems we support and make updates.

“Each year, we assess which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices may also lack the latest security updates or the necessary functionality to run WhatsApp.”
